Frequently asked questions

Questions, answered

Everything people ask before their first rental. If yours is not here, text 515-669-7693 and you will have an answer in a few minutes.

Renting

Who can rent a trailer?

Anyone 21 or older with a valid driver's license, a credit or debit card for the hold, and current auto insurance on the tow vehicle. Businesses can rent under the company name with a card and a driver who meets the same requirements.

Do I need a special license to tow these trailers?

No. A standard Iowa Class C license covers every trailer we rent when towed by a pickup or SUV. A combination over 26,001 lb would need a CDL, and none of our trailers behind a consumer truck comes close.

How far ahead should I book?

A few days is plenty most of the time. Weekends from April through October book out a week or two ahead, and the dump trailer is the busiest. Same-day rentals work when the trailer is open, so call.

Is there a deposit?

We place a $250 hold on a credit or debit card at pickup. It is a hold, not a charge, and it drops off the same day the trailer comes back clean and undamaged. No cash deposits.

How does a weekend rental work?

Pick up Friday after 3 pm and return Monday before 9 am for the weekend rate. It covers the whole weekend for the price of about two and a half days.

Can I keep the trailer longer than I booked?

Usually, yes. Text us before your return time. If nobody is booked behind you, we extend at the daily rate. If someone is, we will tell you right away so you can plan.

What if I need to cancel?

Cancel free up to 24 hours before pickup by text, call, or email. Inside 24 hours we charge one day's rate. Weather cancellations on the dump trailer are free any time, since you cannot dump in a downpour either.

Where do I pick up?

In Des Moines. The exact address comes with your confirmation. Pickups and returns are by appointment, 7 days a week, and we are flexible on early and late times.

Do you deliver?

Not as a standard service right now. For multi-week job-site rentals in the metro, ask and we will quote a drop-off.

Towing

What size hitch ball do I need?

2-5/16 in for all three trailers. A 2 in ball will not latch and is the most common reason a pickup gets delayed. Make sure the ball and the mount are both rated above the trailer's GVWR.

Do I need a brake controller?

Yes. Every trailer we rent has electric brakes, and Iowa requires working brakes on any trailer over 3,000 lb. Most trucks with a factory tow package have one built in. Plug-in controllers from a parts store work too and take about ten minutes to install on trucks with a factory brake-controller port.

What plug do I need?

A 7-way round RV-style connector. It runs the lights and the brakes. A 4-flat with an adapter will light the trailer but will not run the brakes, so it does not meet the requirement.

Can I tow with an SUV or a half-ton truck?

Often. The car hauler and enclosed trailer are within range of most half-ton pickups and full-size SUVs with a tow package. The dump trailer loaded to its 14,000 lb GVWR calls for a 3/4-ton or larger, but a half-ton can take lighter loads. Tell us your vehicle and what you are hauling and we will give you a straight answer.

Does my insurance cover the trailer?

Most personal auto policies extend liability coverage to a trailer you are towing, and many extend physical damage coverage as well. Call your agent and ask about a non-owned trailer. You are responsible for damage to the trailer while it is in your care either way.

Can I take the trailer out of state?

Yes, anywhere in Iowa and the bordering states with no mileage charge. Tell us when you book if you are going farther.

Loads

Where do I dump a load in Des Moines?

Metro Waste Authority runs the Metro Park East Landfill in Mitchellville and the Metro Transfer Station in Grimes. Both take trailer loads by weight and charge at the scale. Yard waste, concrete, and shingles can have different rates, so check the current fee sheet we send with your confirmation.

Do you provide straps?

The dump trailer comes with a tarp kit. For the car hauler and enclosed trailer, bring your own straps or chains, or ask about renting a tie-down kit when you book.

What can I not haul?

Hazardous materials, fuel cans, and anything over the trailer's GVWR. No livestock in the enclosed trailer. If you are not sure, ask.
